The Main Bones Of The Body

Did you know that there are 206 bones, 650 muscles, and 360 joints in the human body!? That is a lot! We don't know the names of all of them ourselves, and we definitely don't expect our students to either! So what we have done is simplified things.

We think of the body in terms of "9 major joint complexes":

  1. Wrists
  2. Elbows
  3. Shoulders
  4. Lower back
  5. Middle back
  6. Upper back
  7. Ankles
  8. Knees
  9. Hips

Here is a list of the anatomical name with the common name for each of the main bones. Your teacher may use either during class when giving alignment cues in postures.

• Mandible: jaw

• Clavicle: collarbone

• Sternum: breastplate

• Rib: rib

• Radius and ulna: lower arm

• Humerus: upper arm

• Cervical vertebrae: upper back

• Thoracic vertebrae: middle back

• Lumbar vertebrae: lower back

• Illium: illium or illiac crests

• Sacrum: sacrum

• Ischium: sitting bones

• Femur: upper leg

• Patella: knee caps

• Tibia and fibula: lower legs
